Ladies and Gentlemen, Occasions such as these, provide us with powerful moments to reflect on our own mortality and in the process help us to find a fuller meaning of the mission of life, through the lives of those whose journeys have been completed. These moments also serve to remind us that each life no matter how great or modest is in its own way a contribution to the total human story and that our personal stories can become a source of inspiration to others and help liberate the best in all of us. And so today we celebrate the life of our friend and colleague Elisabeth Mann Borgese, a life of quiet strength and towering authority, a life made larger by a clear sense of public purpose, and enhanced by deep commit- ment to the "cause of oceans" to which she devoted more than 60 years. In the process she has touched the lives of many, great and small, and revealed for us those powerful connections where scholarship meets steward- ship in the service of the oceans, humanity and peace.
