Centre de Droit Maritime et Oceanique (CDMO): Report of Activities for the Period 1996-1997 The Centre de Droit Maritime et Oceanique (CDMO) of the faculty of law of the University of Nantes is a laboratory recognized by the Research Direction of the French Ministry of National Education (EA 1165). The aim is to do research in maritime law, international law of the sea, coastal law, marine exploitation, and environmental protection. The team is constituted by six professors, two assistant professors, three postdoctorate researchers, 20 doctorate students, and 15 D.E.A. students. The CDMO publishes a yearbook (volume 15 available); an electronic review, "Neptunus International" on the web (http://Palissy.humana.Univ-Nantes.fr/ / CDMO/webThalassa.html); and a treaty, Droits Maritimes (Juris Services Lyon 1996) (first two volumes available). During the past year publications have concerned, especially, • resources of the high sea, • rules about towage, • liability of maritime carrier, • maritime work contract, • coastal politics integration, and • nonvessel operator carrier. Five theses have been supported about • Columbian politics about space and resources of the sea, • international straits in the new law of the sea, • marine insurance and the classification clauses, • marine piracy, and • dangerous goods carriage by sea. Twenty theses are in preparation in the laboratory. The main activity in 1996-97 has been to prepare the Nantes-Ottawa maritime law symposium, which was held in Nantes in May 1997 about law, geography, and the economy in recent developments between the two countries.
