The volume concludes with a chapter by Robbins which provides a sum- mary of the key categories of challenges confronting Slovenia as it continues with its efforts at state-building. Given the growing number of edited works that lack conclusions, the attempt by the editors to include a summary chapter is appreciated; however, this conclusion is disappointing a s Robbins' thoughts are very impressionistic, make no effort to draw on the work presented in the volume, and include no reference to the literature on state-building or d e m o - cratic consolidation. The volume also lacks an ndex, but includes a compre- hensive bibliography and appendices with useful statistical data. This volume constitutes a valuable source of information for those seeking comparative data on democratic consolidation in post-Communist systems. It also offers a useful c a s e study on the problems of contemporary state-building (purists might insist on revising the title of this book to Making a New State).
