ESENIN: THE SOURCES OF HIS POETICS OMRY RONEN (Ann Arbor, MI) ESENIN: THE SOURCES OF HIS POETICS D u r i n g the past decade, practically every year was blessed by a rich crop o f scholarly p u b l i c a t i o n s m a r k i n g the c e n t e n n a r y anniversaries o f celebrated 20th century Russian poets: Khlebnikov, Gumilev, Khodasevich, and Livshits, A k h m a t o v a , P a s t e r n a k , M a n d e l ' s h t a m , Tsvetaeva, and Maiakovskii. The Esenin centennial, the final event in this sequence, has demonstrated t h a t this p o e t still attracts scholarly a t t e n t i o n as a paradigmatic socio-biographical figure r a t h e r t h a n an artist. There are biographies o f Esenin, t h e r e are memoirs and anti-memoirs, legends and counterlegends, b u t there is no study o f Esenin's poetics as a whole.
