Abstract

As N. N. Shneidman states in the introduction of his book Soviet Literature in the 1980's: Decade in Traresition, his purpose in writing this work is "not to speculate about the future of the Soviet state but rather to assess the impact of the political and social changes of the last decade on the development of Soviet culture and literature." He accomplishes this by exploring the literary scene of the 1980s within the context of a changing Soviet society. The artistic value of the literature of the 1980s is not always of primary importance, and, as Shneidman concludes, "its [literature's] social function outweighs all other artistic considerations." Shneidm an attempts to "draw a broad picture of the Soviet literary scene between 1978 and 1988." His selection of authors and works (which he states to be representative of contemporary Soviet literature) is extensive, and discussed by "theme, age, sex, or artistic inclination."
