On the whole, this collection is dominated by well written, but essentially introduc- tory essays with only a few noteworthy contributions. The existence o f specifically Po- lish ideals is not systematically traced, nor is their formative role in Polish history specif- ically argued-despite the implication of the editor's introduction. This is a pity, for the introduction suggests a far more original and interpretive compendium than we in fact are given. Mieczyslaw B. Biskupski Millersville State College Vera Zimanyi, editor. La Pologne et la Hongrie aux XVIe-XVIIIe siècles. Budapest: Aka- démiai Kiadó. 1981. 149 pp. $13.00. A Polish saying proclaims Poles and Hungarians to be brothers "for sabers and for drinking." The two nationalities indeed seem to share common traits, and one may won- der whether similar histories produced them. The present volume explores aspects of early modern Polish and Hungarian history revealing many o f these similarities as well as some differences. The work reprints eleven papers presented by distinguished scholars from b o t h countries at a Polish-Hungarian colloquium in 1976. Publication in Western languages (mostly French) makes the studies mutually intelligible as well as accessible to foreign scholars.
