Neil B. Weissman. Reform in Tsarist Russia: The State Bureaucracy and Local Government,... speech, assembly. The advocates of this position were quite naturally drawn to the legal profession and to the Cadet party, and played important roles in both these realms. Unfortunately, this fascinating phenomenon has not received much attention from historians, far more attracted by the more flamboyant alternatives. In English there exists almost nothing in the nature of either primary or acceptable secondary sources relating to this group o f Jewish thinkers and activists. Therefore, the publication o f a translation of the memoirs o f Oskar Osipovich Gruzenberg, a prominent Jewish lawyer and liberal, is a welcome addition to the literature. Gruzenberg was one of the most important defense attorneys in the best years of the Russian legal system. Among his famous clients were Leon Trotsky and Mendel Beilis. From these memoirs, though, it is abundantly clear that Gruzenberg was a far better at- torney than writer or raconteur. His recollections consist mostly in a straightforward, rather dry recapitulation o f his interesting and celebrated cases and attendant events, un- adulterated by wit or introspection.
