M a t i u s h i n The letter published below was written by the painter Pavel Nikolaevich Filonov (Moscow, 1883-Leningrad, 1941), and it is a vital document in the history o f the Russian avant-garde.1 Not fortuitously, this t e x t is often quoted by specialists, b u t in fragments. The document as a whole, however, is impor- tant, provides answers to a number o f questions concerning the avant-garde, and, therefore, deserves to be published here in t o t o , even if, visually and tex- tually, the translation cannot be faithful to the original-in view of the several lacunae and inconsistencies o f the original text. The definitive translation here was made from the original text in the collection o f the Tret'iakov Gallery, Moscow (Manuscript Section, f. XXV/11), and n o t from the several versions t h a t - l i k e most of Filonov's manuscripts-circulate privately in the Soviet Union and abroad.
