FIENE A Comparison o f t h e Soviet a n d Possev E d i t i o n s o f T h e Master and Margarita, with a N o t e on I n t e r p r e t a t i o n o f t h e Novel In this article I' will give a summary account o f the differences between the 1973 "Khudozhestvennaia literatura" edition o f TheMaster and Margarita and the 1969 Possev edition. I will also comment on the significance o f these differences, where applicable, respecting interpretation o f the novel. In addition, I will show that discrepancies between the Possev edition and the translation o f The Master and Margarita by Michael Glenny are n o t all dur to translator's liberties and license, but, in some instances, to differences in the original manuscripts. The "Khudozhestvennaia literatura" edition has been reprinted t w i c e - i n 1975 and 1978; the three printings are the same ex- cept for correction o f typographical errors, more having been made in the third than in the second printing.
