Abstract

Nechkina denies the existence o f a "school" o f Kliuchevskii with the facile observa- tion that so eclectic a scholar could hardly found a "school." Moreover, she adds, Kliuchevskii's students frequently overturned his conclusions, and, in any event, splin- tered under the impact o f emigration and Soviet Marxism. All of this is true, b u t super- ficial; surely we need a broader definition o f the problem o f Kliuchevskii's influence on both Western and Soviet historiography. The topics which Kliuchevskii omitted from his Kurs, such as the impact of the nationalities or the influence of the Mongols, generally continue to be neglected. Systematic analysis o f Kliuchevskii's influence upon the shape of Russian historiography has never been attempted. It would require a specialists's skills in medieval Russian history, and, once again, would fall beyond the scope o f Nech- kina's study. As an investigation of Kliuchevskii's personality, his life and career, and the interaction of the two, Nechkina's masterpiece will long remain definitive, the most acute and com- pelling painting of perhaps Imperial Russia's greatest h i s t o r i a n - a Kliuchevskii "without t e a r s "
