Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz, 2006. vii, 326 pp. € 68. In the middle of the thirteenth century, the Tatar invasion brought an end to Kievan Rus, one of the largest states in Medieval Europe. Several semi-independent principalities formed out of Kievan territories did not survive long, and, between 1340 and 1392, most of them were annexed by the Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland. Th e so-called Red Ruthenia, part of the Halych-Volynia Principality, was integrated into Poland. Podillia, Ukraina (at the time, a geo- graphical category), and Podliachia joined the Duchy of Lithuania. After 1492, Moscow took parts of the Ruthenian territories from the Duchy of Lithuania. In 1569, the Kingdom of Poland and the Duchy of Lithuania concluded a union and formed the Polish-Lithuanian Common- wealth, which incorporated all the remaining Kievan territories.
