The photograph accompa- nying this description exemplifies the book's successful use o f illustrations. Two chapters then analyze Czech scenographers in the interwar period and Czech scenography since 1968. The chapter "Czech Hamlets o f the Twentieth Century" provides a concrete example o f how the history o f the Czech theatre can be traced through the history o f productions o f Hamlet. Burian considers productions by a variety o f directors and scenographers, in- cluding those whose work was described in earlier chapters (Hilar, Burian, Krej6a, Schorm, Svoboda, and others). Hamlet provides a specific case study, a microcosm o f the history o f Czech Theatre, allowing us to see how the creators o f Czech theatre embodied their differing visions in their productions. The book's final chapter is devoted to a playwright, Vaclav Havel, and considers Havel's involvement with theatre over his entire career. We learn about Havel's experi- ence with theatre production, his credo o f theatre, and his belief in the role o f theatre as indirect critic o f society.
