Since 1986, the seventeen volumes o f Polin under the expert editorial direction o f An- tony Polonsky have contributed much to the creation and development o f a new field o f scholarly inquiry: the history o f Polish Jewry and, more broadly, o f Christian-Jewish rela- tions in East Central Europe. Several o f these volumes are particularly memorable for the quality o f their scholarship, none more so than the volume under review devoted to the shtetl, in which practically every essay makes for interesting and provocative reading. The purpose o f the volume clearly is to complicate the historical shtetl, removing it at a distance from the images and stereotypes, positive and negative, constructed in Yiddish, Hebrew and Polish literature.
