Although located at the geographical fringe o f European Russia, the Solovki island group played central roles in several pivotal developments in Russian history. The Solov- etskii monastery epitomized North Russian monasticism, and also principled resistance to the ecclesiastical reforms o f the mid-seventeenth century. The monastery fostered eco- nomic growth in the region and witnessed the blossoming commercial ties with England through the White Sea-trade route. It was a destination for pilgrims from its first year, and for tourists in modern days. And through much o f their history, the islands served as a prison, first for religious dissenters and clerical criminals, and in the Soviet era as the most notorious.labor camp in the Gulag.
