Sebastian Smith. A l l a h ' s M o u n t a i n s : The Battle for Chechnya. Revised Edition. London New York: I. B. Tauris, 2001. xxxix, 288 pp. $18.95 (paper). Russia has had major problems securing control of the northern Caucasus over the past three centuries. Sebastian Smith's newly updated work is a good place to begin ex- ploring one of the most recent episodes in this long story: the recent conflicts in Chech- nya. He begins with a succinct overview of the region's geography and history. Next, Smith surveys how the end of the Soviet Union affected the Caucasus and explains why this event caused particular difficulties for Chechnya in the early 1990s. He concludes with a detailed history of the "first" Chechen war of 1994-96 based on his experiences there as a journalist. This new edition of the book adds a brief discussion of the ongoing "second" Chechen war begun by Vladimir Putin in 1999. The work includes firsthand accounts of confrontations during the mid-1990s. The au- thor offers a thorough discussion of actual combat as he saw it unfold, providing detailed descriptions of particular incidents and situations.
