This article presents a survey of the post-Soviet Russian historiography on the February Revolution in Petrograd, focusing specifically on the role of the iv Duma. It suggests that in contrast to the Soviet-era historical scholarship, which emphasized “counterrevolutionary” character and actions of the Duma leaders during the February uprising, post-Soviet Russian historians have largely abandoned the old clichés. Yet they pay little attention to the role played by the Duma in the revolutionary events of February–March 1917, and either ignore or downplay its contribution to the revolution’s success. The Duma is often portrayed as a front for the behind-the-scenes and real revolutionary activity organized and coordinated by the “conspirators” from the Central War Industries Committee ( cwic ). Drawing on the newly available rich source material, the article argues against the dominant interpretation that the Duma leaders were “reluctant revolutionaries” who were forced to embark on a revolutionary course by the insurgents and the more decisive leaders of the Petrograd Soviet.
