Kitablar: ttalya that Western civilization was transmitted in Dutch language, i.e. in a specific form, so that they were isolated from other nations receiving stimuli from a number of other developed nations because of the use of English or French language. Another dilemma is the cultural diversity of Indonesia. Only by the fact of Dutch rule these islands with different ethnic groups and different cultures had been brought together; yet this rule has not lasted long enough or has not penetrated deeply enough to weld the different units together into one cultural area. This means that today stresses appear when attempts are made to go back to traditional cultural traits, because such traits are very often typical of only one region and not of others. Thus, overstressing "national" or "traditional" elements breeds tensions; overstressing Western elements-be these of the Western European or the Eastern European branch of Western civilization-breeds nationalistic reaction.
