<jats:p> Cet article a pour objectif de présenter une étude de la modalité épistémique, en birman. S'appuyant sur un large corpus, <jats:italic>i.e.</jats:italic> la traduction d'un roman d'Harry Potter, cette étude s'intéresse à la traduction des valeurs épistémiques de <jats:italic>may, might,</jats:italic> <jats:italic>could,</jats:italic> <jats:italic>maybe</jats:italic> en birman. D'autres études sur la modalité basées sur des corpus parallèles ont prouve leur utilité (van der Auwera & al 2005), et ce travail devrait permettre de confirmer (ou d'infirmer) les analyses proposées précédemment sur le sujet (Vittrant 2005): absence d'adverbes épistémiques, utilisation massive d'un marqueur irréalis et recours à des constructions complexes idiomatiques. En outre, cet article présente des donnees sur une langue rarement prise en compte dans les études typologiques. </jats:p>
