DISTRIBUTIONAL PATTERNS OF DEEP-WATER BRACHYURAN CRABS IN THE STRAITS OF FLORIDA

DISTRIBUTIONAL PATTERNS OF DEEP-WATER BRACHYURAN CRABS IN THE STRAITS OF FLORIDA During the course of the Deep-Sea Biology Program of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), University of Miami, an extensive sampling of the epibenthic macrofauna of the Straits of Florida was conducted on board the RV Gerda. The main purpose of this campaign focused on the study of the composition and distribution of the major faunal assemblages in the area. One such assemblage was represented by a large array of truly deep-water crabs, that is, those species that normally occur below 100 fm (183 m). The availability of this collection from a geographic area such as the Straits, in which overall geology and hydrographic regime are well documented, provided an excellent opportunity to assess the influence of some environmental factors upon the mo- dalities of distribution adopted by the deep-water brachyuran community inhab- iting this area. An analysis conducted earlier on the individual distribution of 87 brachyuran species obtained by the RV Gerda (Soto, 1978) revealed that the hydrographical conditions and the topography of the Straits cause a considerable overlapping between the distribution of faunal elements occurring within the outer continental shelf and those commonly recognized as archibenthal forms.
