Abstract

Until now, the Phoxocephalopsidae contained only one genus and two species; a second genus with reduced mandibular structure has been discovered. The Phoxocephalopsidae are confined to coldwater South America and are not to be confused with the immense family Phoxocephalidae, a distant relative. The for- mer appear to be plesiomorphic both to North American and Australian apo- morphs and thus resemble certain genera of the Phoxocephalidae, such as Meth- arpinia, that also occur in the Magellan region and have common plesiomorphy aimed outwards towards apomorphy in Australia and North America. An evo- lutionary flow chart therefore would show a common Gondwanan component with very primitive evolutionary grades surviving in the Fuegian regions. Methods and acknowledgements are found in Barnard and Clark (this issue, p. 281, p. 288). Phoxocephalopsidae (Barnard and Drummond, in press) Diagnosis.-With fossorial adaptations in broad, short body, immense and splayed legs and second antennae, these parts armed heavily with long setae and/ or stiff spines, often facially. Rostrum moderate, head broad, cheek moderate. Antenna 1 of haustorius form, article 1 short, main setal row strong, article 2 as long as 1, article 3 often shorter, primary flagellum elongate, accessory flagellum short. Antenna 2 of haustorius
