MATERIALS AND METHODS Individual adult male G. ocennicus, 20-25 mm long from the rostrum to the base of the telson, were held in 250 ml of seawater (SW; 32%c) in glass jars, at 10°C, and under a light/dark regime corresponding to prevailing environmental conditions. Light was provided by four "cool white" 40 W fluorescent tubes suspended 40 cm above the water level in the jars, the mouths of which were covered by a double layer of cheesecloth. The animals were fed aci lib. on pieces of Fucu.s frond; water was changed weekly. The animals were checked four times daily. When an animal was seen to have undergone ecdysis, the time was recorded (this is zero time), and the water was carefully drained from the jars and replaced by 250 ml of either 100% SW (32%,.) or 10% SW (100% SW diluted with distilled water and kept at 100C until use). Some animals, presumably shedding their old cuticle soon after the last inspection of the day, consumed portions of their exuviae before their ecdysis was detected. There- fore, at all zero time water changes, all exuviae or remnants of exuviae were left in the animals' containers. The regular schedule
