ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ATHANAS AMAZONE (DECAPODA: ALPHEIDAE) AND SQUILLA MANTIS (STOMATOPODA: SQUILLIDAE)

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ATHANAS AMAZONE (DECAPODA: ALPHEIDAE) AND SQUILLA MANTIS (STOMATOPODA:... and Shrimps in the family Alpheidae are mainly cryptic species. Since many of them are as- sociated with corals, the family is better rep- resented in tropical latitudes. The Mediter- ranean fauna includes five genera and only 15 species of alpheid shrimps. Five species are lessepsian immigrants restricted to the Lev- ant basin (Lewinsohn and Galil, 1982). Many species in the genus Alpheus burrow in sedimentary substrata. Some are known to be associated with gobiid fish (Karplus, 1987). Other species in the genus Athanas are associated with sea urchins (Banner and Ban- ner, 1983; Gherardi, 1991). Aretopsis ama- bili.s de Man lives inside gastropod shells oc- cupied by hermit crabs of the genus Dard- anus (Banner and Banner, 1983). Stomatopoda are also cryptic crustaceans, living in burrows excavated in soft bottoms or inside crevices in coralline and hard sub- strata (Reaka and Manning, 1981). The as- sociation and distribution of the parasitic gas- tropod Caledoraiella montrouzieri Souverbie, with several Indo-Pacific species of the stom- atopod genus Gonodactylus was recently summarized by Manning and Reaka-Kudla (1990). Bivalve molluscs commensal on Western Atlantic Lysiosquilla scabricauda (Lamarck) were described by Boss (1965) and Mikkelsen and Bieler (1989), and the as- sociation http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Crustacean Biology Brill
