FECUNDITY AND RELATIVE GROWTH OF THE CRAB PLATYXANTHUS PATAGONICUS (BRACHYURA: PLATYXANTHIDAE) IN PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA

FECUNDITY AND RELATIVE GROWTH OF THE CRAB PLATYXANTHUS PATAGONICUS (BRACHYURA: PLATYXANTHIDAE) IN... Platyxanthus patagonicus A. Milne-Ed- wards is the largest crab of the family Pla- tyxanthidae in the coastal waters of the southwest Atlantic. This species is distrib- uted in a depth of 3-100 m from the Cabo Santa Maria, Uruguay (34°S) to Rawson, Chubut, Argentina (44°S) (Boschi, 1976). It is a bycatch of trawlers of shrimp (Pleoticus mulleri Bate) and hake (Merluccius hubbsi Marini). In South America, xanthids and platyxanthids have different levels of ex- ploitation. For example, Platyxanthus cren- ulatus A. Milne-Edwards, which ranges from Uruguay to 42°S in Argentina (Bos- chi, 1964), is on the list of marine species of potential economic importance of FAO (Cervigon and Fischer, 1979). The xanthid Homalaspis plana (A. Milne-Edwards) has been captured commercially in Chile since 1966 (Retamal, 1970) and is now being ex- ported (canned) to Europe and South Amer- ica (A. Carsen and S. Kleinman, personal observation). Instead, the commercial ex- ploitation of P. patagonicus A. Milne-Ed- wards is important locally (near the port of Rawson), although it could expand to other localities of Argentina in the near future. There is only limited information on the biology of Platyxanthu,s patagonicus. Rath- bun (1930) redescribed the species. Abstract

Boschi ( 1964)
