and Periclimenes ornatus is a small caridean shrimp that has been reported to have a symbiotic relationship with species of sea anemones such as Parasicyonis actinos- troides Wassilieff and P. maxima Wassilieff in Japanese waters (Bruce, 1976a, b, 1983; Suzuki and Hayashi, 1977; Bruce and Svo- boda, 1983). Little is known about the ecol- ogy and life history of this species, apart from a brief report by Suzuki and Hayashi (1977). Ecological studies of other species within this genus are limited to observa- tions and experiments on cleaning and other behaviors (Limbaugh et al., 1961; Mahn- ken, 1972; Sargent and Wagenbach, 1975; Bruce, 1976a; Criales, 1984; Jonasson, 1987), except for Nizinski (1989) who com- prehensively reported on the ecological dis- tribution and demography of Periclimenes anthophilus Holthuis and Eibl-Eibesfeldt. There is very little information about the life-history traits, such as growth, repro- duction, and longevity, of species of this genus. Caridean species with multiple genera- tions usually have one long-term and over- wintering generation and one short-term and summer generation, or more (Ikematsu, 1963; Niwa and Hamano, 1990). With re- spect to the short-term generation, a size- structure sequence cannot be used for anal- ysis of generation structure
