EFFECT OF INTRAMOLT GROWTH AND SALINITY ON THE LARVAL MORPHOLOGY OF PENAEUS SEMISULCATUS DE HAAN (DECAPODA: PENAEOIDEA)

EFFECT OF INTRAMOLT GROWTH AND SALINITY ON THE LARVAL MORPHOLOGY OF PENAEUS SEMISULCATUS DE HAAN... Comprehensive ecological studies of lar- val penaeids have been hampered by tax- onomic difficulties (Rothlisberg et al., 1983). The major morphological characteristics of penaeid larvae in the same genus usually appear to be identical, and previous at- tempts to find discrete taxonomic charac- ters to separate these larvae have been un- successful (e.g., Cook, 1966; Cook and Murphy, 1971; Courties, 1976). To date, the only reliable way of identifying larval pen- aeids is to use discriminant analysis of mor- phological characters, based on a reference collection of larvae of known identity (Rothlisberg et al., 1983, 1985; Jackson, 1986; Jackson and Rothlisberg, in press). The accuracy of identifications made by discriminant analysis relies on the assump- tion that the complete natural range of mor- phological variation for a given species is present in the reference collection. For this reason, knowledge of the degree and cause of morphological variation within species is important. Preston (1985) found that both salinity and temperature affected the total length of protozoea I of Metapenaeus ben- net tae (Racek and Dall). However, more de- tailed analysis of the effects of environmen- tal parameters on penaeid larval morphology has not been attempted. Abstract

Intramolt growth can also
