TORTANUS SHENI, NEW NAME, REPLACEMENT NAME FOR TORTANUS DENTICULATUS SHEN AND LEE, 1963 (COPEPODA: CALANOIDA)

TORTANUS SHENI, NEW NAME, REPLACEMENT NAME FOR TORTANUS DENTICULATUS SHEN AND LEE, 1963... In 1889 Giesbrecht briefly characterized Corynura denticulata as a new species, de- scribing it more fully in his monograph of 1892. When the name of the genus Cory- nura Brady was found to be preoccupied, Giesbrecht and Schmeil (1898) introduced the replacement name, Tortanus. Scott (1909) synonymized Tortanus denticulatus (Giesbrecht) with T. barbatus (Brady, 1883). Based upon a sizeable number of specimens Fruchtl (1924) amply confirmed this syn- onymy after it had been questioned by Sew- ell (1912). Tortanus barbatus belongs to the second of three groups of species into which Steuer (1926) had divided the genus Tor- tanus (gracilis forcipatus-barbatus group). This group corresponds to the subgenus Tortanus of Sewell (1932). Shen and Lee (1963) described the new species Tortanus denticulatus from the Chiekong River mouth. Although there ap- pear to be no further records, T. denticulatus Shen and Lee was subsequently cited by sev- eral authors. Chen and Zhang (1965) in- cluded it in their comparison of a new species with related species in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. Bowman (1971) as- signed it to the first of the three groups of species of Steuer (1926) (setacaudatus-dis- caudatus group). Chen (1983) mentioned it as one of the endemics in the coastal waters of Guangdong (Kwangtung) Province. Oht- suka et al. (1987) listed it among 14 species of Tortanus occurring in the neighboring waters of Japan, Korea, and China. According to Art. 57cii of the Interna- tional Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1985) Tortanus denticulatus Shen and Lee is a junior secondary homonym of T. den- ticulatus (Giesbrecht), and hence must not be used as a valid name (Art. 52a). It has no known available synonym. Therefore, I propose, according to Art. 60a,b, the re- placement name, Tortanus sheni, new name, in honor of the late Dr. Shen Chiajui. RECEIVED: 25 April 1988. Abstract
