and The peracaridean order Mictacea was cre- ated by Bowman et al. (1985) in order to encompass two simultaneously described species: Hirsutia bathyalis Sanders, Hessler, and Garner, 1985 (placed in a new family Hirsutiidae), from the central western At- lantic off Surinam at 1,000 m, and Micto- caris halope Bowman and Iliffe, 1985 (in the new family Mictocarididae), from ma- rine caves on Bermuda. Hirsutia bathyalis was based on one preparatory female, now badly digested, and a juvenile exuviae, now lost; and M. halope on 55 specimens. We report on a third specimen of Hirsutia found by one of us (JJ) while sorting ma- terial collected in 1986 with a 3/4-scale WHOI epibenthic sled (Hessler and Sand- ers, 1967) on the eastern Bass Strait slope of Australia by G. C. B. Poore, C. C. Lu, and M. F. Gomon (Museum of Victoria), and L. S. Hammond (Victorian Institute of Marine Sciences). The specimen corrobo- rates the detailed account of H. bathyalis by Sanders et al. (1985) and adds information on points which were not clear on the orig- inal material. The specimen is recognized as a new species, H. sandersetalia. The specimen was damaged during dredging, with distal
