BY THE DIRECTION OF THE MOST NOBLE AND DISTINGUISHED CHRISTEN FRIIS” The Influence of Chancellor Christen Friis (1581-1639) on the Histories of Denmark by Johannes Pontanus (1571-1639) and Johannes Meursius (1579-1639) Summary The 1630s saw the publicationof no less thantwo official Histories of Denmark written at the request of King Christian IV. The authors were Johannes Pontanus and Johannes Meursius, both of Dutch extraction. Architect and driving force behind their employment as royal historiographers was the chancellor Christen Friis. Enough material survives to give us an idea of his instructions to the authors, and the article discusses the interplay between them and the chancellor in the shaping of the new national histories. Introduction In the course of the 1630’s no less than two comprehensive Latin histories of Denmark were published, the Rerum Danicarum Historia (1631) by Johannes Pontanus and the Historia Danica (1630-38) by Johannes Meursius. Both authors were of Dutch extraction and both were engaged as royal historiographers by ChristianIV. The official status of the works clearly emerges. On the title page of Pontanus’s history the author is presented as “regius historiographus”, and the portrait of Meursius which introduces his work is framed by an
