Jill Bepler PRACTICAL PERSPECTIVES ON THE COURT AND ROLE OF PRINCES Georg Engelhard von Loehneyss’ Aulico Politica 1622-24 and Christian IV of Denmark’s Königlicher Wecker 1620 Summary This article looks at the life and career of Georg Engelhard von Loehneyss. It links his pragmatic handbook of life at court Aulico Politica (1622) to the negative example of the disastrous rule of Friedrich Ulrich of Braunschweig- Lüneburg (1591-1634) and the semi-public letter of remonstration written to the latter by his uncle Christian IV King of Denmark in 1620, Königlicher Wecker. Devoting two contributions to Georg Engelhart von Loehneyss, a figure most people (eventhose involved incourt studies) have barely heard of, seems to call for some justification. A set of schol- arly papers celebrating Christian IV, although also encompassing later manifestations of court culture, is essentially focused on a specific pre-Thirty Years’ War generation: Christian IV himself, Moritz of Hessen-Kassel (1572-1632) and Heinrich Julius of Braunschweig (1564-1613). Loehneyss represents the pre-war generation of German nobles who made their careers at court and clearly saw themselves called upon to defend and uphold traditional values threatened by political, economic, cultural and religious change.
