Bis heute haftet Trithemius’ Schreiberlob, rund 50 Jahre nach Gutenbergs Erfindung entstanden, der Ruf des Anachronistischen, gar Kuriosen an. Die genauere Analyse legt indes eine andere Wertung nahe: Der Buchdruck wird nur abgelehnt, wo er das Mißverständnis produziert, ‘humanes’ Schreiben sei durch ihn verzichtbar geworden; hier nämlich liegt für den Klosterhumanisten Trithemius ein grundsätzlicher Irrtum: Das neue Medium kann das alte nicht ersetzen, weil es beim Schreiben auf den Prozeß und auf die reflexiven Erträge des Prozesses ankommt, beim Druck dagegen nur auf das Ergebnis. Vom heutigen Standpunkt fasziniert eine Anthropologie des Schreibens, die in mancher Hinsicht an postmoderne Positionen anklingt, für die Trithemius indes mit guten Gründen vor allem Gewährsleute aus der karolingischen Frühphase seiner Epoche anführt.
