MISZELLEN Harry Vredeveld SOME REMARKS ON HEINRICH BEBEL'S PROVERBIA GERMANICA, 555: "UBI AMOR, IBI DOLOR" Like so many of the proverbs in Heinrich Bebel's Proverbia Germanica (1508), there is nothing particularly "German" about number 555: 'Ubi amor, ibi dolor. "1 There were, of course, numerous German formulations and treatments of the adage, as anyone familiar with medievalliterature can attest. But the experience of love's sorrows is universal, as ancient as love itself: "litore quot conchae, tot sunt in amore dolores", to cite Ovid's famous line, Ars 2,519. Unlike Ovid and his courtly inheritors, however, Bebel was amoralist and a teacher. His proverbs were originally intended for use in the schools, which meant that they had to inculcate not only good Latin, but also good morals. That, I think, is why he elucidates the proverb on the sorrows of love with abrief commentary in the form of two quotations. The first one comes from an unnamed, still unidentified poet, the other derives from one of his own poetic works: Ubi amor, ibi dolor.
