It is the painful and sad duty of the International Society for Oriental Research to announce to its members the death of one of its founders and most active members, its indefatigable treasurer, Mr. William George Middleton Edwards, who died on August 28, ig5o, in Bebek, Istanbul. At the end of World War II, a number of scholars of different nationalities, resident in Turkey, resolved to found a Society for Oriental Research on an international basis believing that this would be the proper way for reconsolidating oriental studies in both Eastern and Western countries. The idea immediately appealed to Mr. Edwards and invoked his active generosity. Without hesitation he agreed to become the treasurer of the Society and during the closing years of his life, he devoted himself fully to the work, giving up a great deal of his very valuable time, helping to build the organisation in spite of many difficulties. The members of its Executive Committee were always encouraged by his never failing energy and zeal. In every respect his death has meant a tremendous loss to the Society. Though of English descent, Mr. W. G. M. Edwards was born in Istanbul, on December 27th, 1873.
