Abstract

C1N / CHINA Although it is known that secret societies played an important role in the Chinese Revolution of 191 practically nothing has been done in the study of these societies. So far only one competent study (The Hung Society) exists; the books of B. Favre (Les Sociétéx secretes en Chine, Paris 1933; cf. Ostas. Grootaers and starts at the point where Grootaers' investigations on popular religion ended. Grootaers adopted his geographical method in studying the distribution 01 local cults in Northern Shansi. Li tried to get inner information about one of these cults which is linked to a local secret society. He was able to get data on the history, the origin, the sacred texts and the ceremonial of this "Huang-t'ien-tao" (Yellow Heaven Religion). The society, now having a quite limited local distribution, seems to be the revival of a Ming-time society, as almost all modern societies. In the following parts of his book he studies two other societies (1-kuan-tao and Kui-i-tao) and adduces some material for another one (I-hsin-t'ien-tao), mostly from the Tientsin-Shantung
