SURIYE / SYRIA This very useful book contains a long introductory chapter, and gives as its main part a "classification des motifs, themes et accessoires epiques", thereafter a "table des concordances", three "Appendices", i.e. short Arabic texts from al-Mascudi, the Fihrist, and a]-Maqrizi, a "tableau des longeurs relatives des contes des Mille et une Nuits", a "bibliographie des ouvrages consultes", an "index des noms de personnes", an "index des noms des lieux", and some "corrigenda et errata". In the introductory chapter the author describes the interest that was taken in Europe, especially in France, in books on the East before Galland published his famous translation of the Arabian Nights; Oriental studies were greatly enhanced by the influence of Colbert, the well known French statesman of the seventeenth century. Up to the time of Galland life in the East was mainly known through books of travellers, but the Nights furnished original descriptions by the Orientals themselves. M. Eliss6eff then charac- terizes Galland's work clearly and correctly, and he adds a short biography of Antoine Galland. After that he analizes the frame story according to the results reached by M.
