The East is Black: Cold War China in the Black Radical Imagination , written by Robeson Taj Frazier

The East is Black: Cold War China in the Black Radical Imagination , written by Robeson Taj Frazier (Durham, nc : Duke University Press, 2015). 328 pp. $94.95 (cloth). $25.95 (paper). The East is Black is a brilliant work that explores how the People’s Republic of China ( prc ) inspired the political imaginations of African American radicals during the Cold War. It traces the travels and writings of African American activists, intellectuals, journalists, and teachers with dedicated chapters on W.E.B. Du Bois and Shirley Graham Du Bois, William Worthy, Mabel and Robert F. Williams, and Vicki Garvin. The East is Black joins a growing field on African American internationalism and specifically Afro-Asian internationalism. Nevertheless, this work makes a distinctive contribution. First and foremost, Robeson Taj Frazier clearly situates East is Black not just in relation to African American history and u.s. history, but also in the context of China Studies. The language skills of the author allowed him access to primary source materials in Chinese. He also frames his findings in relation to diplomatic, political, and visual cultural studies of the prc . Consequently, this study not only examines how African American travelers and radicals perceived or experienced the prc , East is Black also contextualizes their journeys and writings in relation to the prc http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of American-East Asian Relations Brill
