These politicised members of the diaspora have almost always been influenced and guided by family histories and experiences that are enmeshed in Iraqi political history. Zaid Al-Ali begins his book, The Struggle for Iraq’s Future: How Corruption, Incompetence and Sectarianism Have Undermined Democracy , 1 with a description of his family’s journey as a “contextual backdrop” that led to his own involvement in Iraqi political affairs. 2 Zaid’s father, Salah Al-Ali, was a senior member of the Ba’ath Party when it took power in Iraq in 1968.
