Bucure � ti: Editura Academiei Republicii Socialiste România, 1989. 282 pp. Romanians of the Danubian Principalities in early modern times were under the suzerainty of Ottoman sultans, who initially appointed native rulers in Wallachia and Moldavia. Turkish dissatisfaction with Romanian princes eventually led the sultans to select Greeks from the Phanar district in Constantinople to govern the principalities, a regime that lasted from 1715 to 1822 in Wallachia. During the Phanariot era, local customs and Roman law, as codified in the Byzantine Empire, constituted the wellspring of Wallachia's law.
