Turkish dissatisfaction with Romanian princes eventually led the sultans to select Greeks from the Phanar district in Constantinople to govern the principalities, a regime that lasted from 1715 to 1822 in Wallachia. During the Phanariot era, local customs and Roman law, as codified in the Byzantine Empire, constituted the wellspring of Wallachia's law.
