Tanner’s book about Croatian history was first published in 1997; the version we are dealing with here is the third one, meaning the book already has its own history. We have to take this history into account in order to begin with the discussion of this study, trying to contextualize it in the time when it was written as well as nowadays. When it originally appeared, it was one of the first—if not the first—works which offered a complete account of Croatian history, from ancient times to the conclusion of the war of independence. It was written in English, which ensured the possibility of being read by a wide audience. The author, a journalist and war correspondent, could describe the most recent events well. All this gave the work importance and usefulness, verified by the positive reviews it received, and its various editions (2001, 2010). Thirteen years after its first appearance, we count several historical accounts on the same topic, in English as well as in other languages. Nonetheless, Tanner’s book retains its usefulness, especially with regards to the last part devoted to the war of independence. On the other hand, what concerns the rest of the book
