I would like to express my appreciation to my predecessor, Professor Vladimir P. Buldakov of the Institute of History at the Russian Academy of Sciences, for his service to the journal as editor-in-chief. My thanks also go out to a number of individuals whose help has been invaluable in the transition from Professor Buldakov’s editorship to mine. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the assistance of Professor William Clark, who serves as the book reviews editor of SPSR . In addition, I am grateful for the assistance of editorial board members Robert Argenbright, John Bushnell, Robert Edelman, Juliane Fürst, Th omas Lahusen, Elena Osokina, and Donald Raleigh for their advice and assistance in the com- pilation of this issue. Finally, I am most thankful for the members of the staff at the journal’s publisher Brill for their support and assistance during this transitional period.
