CHULOS, compiler and editor (Helsinki, Finland) PEASANTS' ATTEMPTS TO REOPEN THEIR CHURCH, 1929-19361 Some time in 1929 peasants of Zemliansk village (Zemliansk district of Voronezh oblast')2 heard that their parish church, the Church of the Resurrec- tion, was to be requisitioned by local authorities for the temporary storage of grain. Having learned of the requisition before it was publicly announced, the Resurrection parish council (tserkovnyi sovet) succeeded in postponing action by arguing that this was the only operating church that served Zemliansk village and neighboring communities. During the winter of 1929-30, however, local officials could no longer be held at bay and the church was forcibly converted into a granary during the winter months. This marked the beginning of an eight-year struggle between believers and the Zemliansk dis- trict executive committee, whose story is to be found in the files of the Cults Commission (Kul'tkomissiia) of the RSFSR in the State Archives of the Russian Federation.3 3 . The parishioners scored a temporary victory in 1930 when they regained access to the church during the spring and summer months, although it con- tinued to be used as a granary in the autumn and winter.
