V. O. Kliuchevskii, Teacher ROBERT F. BYRNES (Bloomington, Ind., U.S.A.) V. O. KLIUCHEVSKII, TEACHER * The career of V. O. Kliuchevskii (1841-1911), the scholar most ob- servers consider the greatest historian of Russia that his country has produced, demonstrates that an outstanding scholar can also attain great success as a classroom teacher, and that the two functions can and should be considered one. Indeed, his involvement in research to answer central questions that his teaching raised suggests that stimulating teaching rests in part upon continu- ing inquiry into questions that arise in class and seminar. His emphasis upon teaching and directing research with a view to enriching and improving his courses demonstrates the truth of the old Catholic saying: "Research is to in- struction as sinning is to confession; if you have not completed the first, you have nothing to say in the second." Throughout his life, Kliuchevskii's primary concern was the increase of knowledge of and interest in Russia's past, beginning with the undergraduates whom he attracted.
