ARTICLES RICHARD HELLIE (Chicago, IL, U.S.A.) FURS IN SEVENTEENTH- CENTURY MUSCOVY Furs played a major role in the economy and politics of seventeenth- century Muscovy. Attaining furs had been a major force behind Russian expansionism for centuries, first into the North, then into Siberia. Fur traders led Muscovite expansionism to the shores of the Pacific in the sev- enteenth century, and fur continued to be one of the major forms of tribute paid by the peoples of Siberia to their overlords in Moscow. In Moscow, the furs were a major item of luxury for the elite, a major object of tribute given to the steppe raiders from the Crimea, and one of the major export items from Russia to the rest of the world. The purpose of this article is to report on the prices of Muscovite furs in the seventeenth century. This is my first report on a large data base (more than 42,000 records, as of this writing) being prepared for the even- tual writing of a History of the Muscovite Economy in the Seventeenth Century. The data base contains information about the price and quantity of every item, as well as social information (jobs, ranks)
