In November 1971, Boris Mikhailovich Kloss delivered three papers in Leningrad in connection with his work on the Nikon Chronicle (Nikonovskaia letopis'-hereafter NikL). After one of these papers, an eminent specialist on Russian chronicles arose to indicate his pleasure that a young man such as Kloss had chosen such an important and massive topic, for to study properly NikL was to make a lifetime commitment. In fact, we have not had to wait a lifetime for the most important results of Kloss's study, which are offered in the book under review. We may well wait another generation though to see the appearance of a book as significant and as well done as Kloss's study. NikL is a massive Muscovite historical compilation which served as a source far many subsequent chronicles in the sixteenth and seventeenth cen- turies.
