Without attempting to resolve this internal contradiction, the following review seeks ;o evaluate the competition and make a guarded recommendation for the next stage in the writing of Russian history. If one is to rank textbooks by durability and staying power in a tough field then Riasanovsky's A History of Russia easily takes first place.
