Brown is Professor of History at Rhode Island College and President of the Finno-Ugric Studies Association of Canada. He has published exten- sively on Russian and Soviet history, comparative medieval and early modern history, language, culture, ethnic studies, and economic history. E-mail: PBrown@ric.edu George G. Weickhardt is an independent scholar who has published numer- ous articles on early Russian law, including criminal procedure, property rights, legal rights of women, commercial law, infl uence of Byzanine and Western law, canon law, judicial duels, and registration of property deeds. Most of his articles have been collected in a book, Early Russian Law , available from Charles Schlacks, Jr., Publisher. He is currently working on an article on the legal framework for Novgorod-Hansa trade. He is a practicing lawyer in San Francisco, California.
