Hans Mottek's Wirtschaftsgeschichte Deutschlands has been a standard work since the first volume appeared eighteen years ago. That book, covering the entire period from the Romans to the French Revolution, was reprinted for the fifth time in 1973. Volume Two, dealing with the years 1800-1870, followed in 1962 and was reissued in 1973. Those volumes were well received, and the final volume promised to be even more valuable, mainly because there were and are so few general accounts of Germany's recent economic history. The monographic literature on the twentieth century is large and growing, but few have attempted to synthesize it. That task cost Mottek and his co-workers twelve years of labor. The steady stream of monographs must have been alternately gratifying and frustrating, since it spared them considerable effort, but kept their own conclusions in a state of flux.
