Th e problem of nationalism, ethnicity, and ethnic minorities continues to be the main theme of political and public discourse in the Central European states. In the fi rst sentence of the intro- duction to Ako skúmať národ: deväť štúdií o etnicite a nacionalizme [Exploring the nation: Nine studies on ethnicity and nationalism] Andrej Findor and Peter Dráľ state: “On a daily basis we hear about nations, ethnic groups, and nationalism and at the same time we rarely realize what we are actually talking about” (5). Th e Slovakian milieu in particular is characterized by the strik- ing absence of publications dealing with modern theories of nations and nationalism and their application to empirical research.
