KÜNNE ON CONCEPTIONS OF TRUTH* Marian DAVID University of Notre Dame Wolfgang Künne's Conceptions of Truth is a very good book and the best of its kind. Künne offers much more than a mere overview. He offers extended critical treatments of the major theories of truth plus variations; he also presents and defends his "Modest Account of Truth". Künne's expositions of the various theories are clear and thorough. His critical discussions are always careful, often enlightening, and of high quality throughout. A very remarkable feature of the book is its richness. Künne provides a wealth of pertinent detail, interweaving systematic and historical observations without ever loosing sight of the main road. In the preface, Künne points out that historical reflections play a much larger role in his book than in other analytical works on the topic. He expresses the hope that as a result of his "scholarly ambitions" the book will serve as a reliable guide to the vast literature on truth, both ancient and contemporary. By my lights, Künne has managed rather nicely to fulfill this hope.
