Th e involvement of European security structures in situations posing threat to international peace and security has not been a straightforward and predictable process. Th e key European actors in this fi eld – EU and NATO – have not originally been designed to uphold the interna- tional peace and security in the broad sense. Th e EU’s original profi le related to economic inte- gration, while NATO has been a collective self-defence arrangement. Still, both organisations have, over past two decades, gone beyond their original scope of functions and played important, sometimes cardinal, role in dealing with situations involving threats to international peace. Th e modalities of this process are described and analysed in both books here under review. Th e volume edited by Kronenberger and Wouters includes important analysis of the
