UK/Argentina Co-operation on Fisheries Conservation 145 UK/Argentina UK/Argentina Co-operation on Fisheries Conservation Further improvements in relations between Argentina and the United Kingdom, following the issuing of their Joint Statements of 19 October 1989 and 15 February 1990 have led to two meetings in Madrid on 12-14 and 23-24 November 1990 to discuss responses to the overfishing of illex squid stocks around the Falkland Islands. The two countries have now agreed arrangements for co-operation on fisheries conservation in the South Atlantic the details of which are set out in their Joint Statement on the Conservation of Fisheries issued on 28 November 1990, and reproduced as an Appendix to this note. I The two countries have agreed to two major steps. First, the establishment of a bilateral UK/Argentine "South Atlantic Fisheries Commission". This Commission will meet at least twice a year alternately in Buenos Aires and London to exchange information on fishing activities in waters between latitude 45°S and latitude 60°S and to make, by mutual agreement, recommendations relating to conservation of the most significant offshore species in those waters.
